This is Barry Zelma speaking for Claims School Incorporated's blog, Zelma on Insurance.
Today we're going to speak about how a prison employee committed a crime she was employed to prevent and was found to be guilty of workers' compensation fraud.
On January 10, 2022, defendant Tiffany Marvell-Jones was convicted by a jury of one count of insurance fraud.
Jones filed a motion for a new trial, which was denied, and on appeal, Jones argued that there was insufficient evidence to support the verdict, that her trial counsel provided ineffective assistance, and that the trial court abused its discretion when it denied her motion for a new trial.
In the People v. Tiffany Marvell Jones, the California Court of Appeal on March 14, 2024, affirmed her conviction.
It all began on January 10, 2022, when Jones was found guilty by a jury.
Jones was sentenced on September 30, 2022, and granted probation for a term of two years.

An Insurance claims professionals should be a person who:

Can read and understand the insurance policies issued by the insurer.
Understands the promises made by the policy.
Understand their obligation, as an insurer’s claims staff, to fulfill the promises made.
Are competent investigators.
Have empathy and recognize the difference between empathy and sympathy.
Understand medicine relating to traumatic injuries and are sufficiently versed in tort law to deal with lawyers as equals.
Understand how to repair damage to real and personal property and the value of the repairs or the property.
Understand how to negotiate a fair and reasonable settlement with the insured that is fair and reasonable to both the insured and the insurer.
